Google Play keywords: board games, August 2026
Twenty-eight open terms in Play board games — and almost none of them are about board games. What people actually search here is dice and two-player.
Contents
Board games returns twenty-eight open terms out of twenty-two thousand keywords, twelve of them under 30 on Rankgrip. That is thin by the standards of this month's set. The thinness is the finding.
Almost nothing here is a board game
The highest-demand open term is fun arrow at 75, with a Rankgrip of 15. Then
arrow through at 29, guess who 2 player offline at 31, hidden colors at 29,
arrow go free at 15. Four of the top five are arrow-routing puzzles.
They land here because the apps holding their top ten are listed under Board —
which on Play has become the shelf for anything played in turns, or against
another person. The recurring holders say the same thing: Dé Double and
डाइस रोलर! hold three terms each, Memoria two. A dice roller and a memory
game are the closest this category gets to a real board-game presence.
Play does not have a board game search market. It has a dice-and-party-game market wearing the label. Ship an actual board adaptation and you will not be competing with other board adaptations. You will be competing with two-player mini-game collections, and your listing should be written for that fight.
Where the room is
arrow go 2026 has the lowest grip in the report at 10, with an eight-month-old
leader. fun arrow and arrow go free both sit at 15 against fourteen-month-old
apps. block fill puzzle offline is at 16 with demand of 64 and a leader under
three years old.
One term behaves the way the category name suggests: guess who 2 player offline, Rankgrip 31, demand 72, with 2 Player Games - Offline established at
the top. The phrase describes exactly what a board game does. A fight, then, not
an opening. If board games are what you build, that is the honest target.
Ten of the twenty-eight are two words, eleven are three. A short tail compared with simulation. That reflects a smaller category, not an easier one.
The wall
puzzles at Rankgrip 75 and game for puzzle at 71 head it, both held by a
jigsaw app past a hundred million installs. block shapes sits at 59 with Block
Blast! on it, and offline play at 59.
Nothing on this wall is a board game either. The terms that reach board-game audiences at scale belong to jigsaw and block puzzle apps — the same story the open rows tell, from the other end.
One more thing about those repeat holders: Dé Double and डाइस रोलर! are both
dice rollers, and neither is listed in English — while this report measures the
US store, in English. Utilities with non-English listings are holding US
board-game slots. That happens when the competing supply is thin enough that
Play reaches for whatever matches.
What this issue shares
Sixteen of these twenty-eight rows also appear in the puzzle report and twelve in casual. Four are exclusive to board games. That makes it the least independent report in the August set, and for a category this size the overlap is itself information: the audience is very nearly the puzzle audience.
The open terms
Ordered by demand, and every term below is one a Play Store search actually returns. This is app store optimization research measured against the live store rather than estimated: Top 10 is how many of the ten results belong to a developer big enough that outranking them is not a listing problem; titles is how many put the phrase in their app name, which is the single hardest signal to beat. Demand ranks these terms against each other — it is not an estimate of searches per month, and no honest number on this page is.
Each app name is a link, marked , that opens that app's Google Play listing in a new tab — in the country and language this report measured, so every row can be checked against the store itself.

The wall
The other half, and the reason to trust the first: the highest demand in board games that is not worth chasing, with the app standing on it. No amount of listing work takes these.

How this was measured
Rankgrip scores how tightly a keyword is already held, 0–100, over four factors: big-developer slot share (40%), exact title matches (25%), leader maturity (20%) and leader tenure (15%). Under 30 is open, 30–69 is a fight worth having, 70 and up will not move.
Terms are attributed to board games by the categories of the apps holding their top ten, then filtered to phrases Play's own autocomplete offers, built only from words at least 50 different app names use. Rankings were measured daily between 2026-07-09 and 2026-08-31. The gate proposed 28; 28 are printed here.
