Casual returns eighty-seven open terms from a category of nearly sixty thousand keywords — second only to simulation this month — and fifty-two of them score under 30 on Rankgrip. On the numbers, the richest hunting ground in the August set.

One figure complicates that: of the eighty-seven rows, eight appear in no other report this month. Thirty-eight are shared with puzzle, thirty-three with simulation, twenty-three with arcade, sixteen with word games. Nine percent of this issue is exclusively casual.

Casual is a shelf, not a genre

No flaw in the measurement. It is the most useful thing this month's data says about the category.

Keywords take the categories of the apps holding their top ten. A block puzzle listed as both Puzzle and Casual puts its terms in both reports; a merge game listed as Casual and Simulation does the same. Casual is the second label almost every light mobile game reaches for, so its keyword set becomes the union of everything around it.

The consequence for a studio is direct: ranking for a casual term usually means ranking against a puzzle game or a merge game, and the competitors waiting there are the ones you would have met in the narrower category anyway. Picking "casual" as your niche does not pick you a smaller fight.

The arrow cluster is here too

fun arrow leads on demand at 75 with a Rankgrip of 15. arrow through follows at 29. game lucky arrows is the lowest grip in the report at 5, with an app four months old at number one, and arrow go 2026 sits at 10 with an eight-month-old leader.

The same cluster appeared in puzzle, in arcade, in board games. A genre of arrow-routing puzzles opened recently, its leaders are all young, and those games list themselves across four categories — so the terms surface in four reports. Take one and you compete in all four at once.

Repeat holders

Between them, fifteen of the eighty-seven rows answer to three apps, none of which set out to make a casual game. Watch that last one. A compilation ranks by containing a hundred small games, so it surfaces wherever small games are searched for while competing properly on none of them. A real game beats it on the specific term.

The wall
