Google Play keywords: word games, August 2026
The thinnest report of the month — eighteen open terms in Play word games, and the method's weakest case. Published with what it gets wrong stated.
Contents
Eighteen open terms out of ten thousand keywords; eight under 30 on Rankgrip. The thinnest report in the August set by a wide margin — and the one where the method visibly struggles.
It goes out anyway, deliberately. A series that only shows the categories where its measurements look good is not measuring anything.
What it gets wrong
The two highest-demand open terms: arrow puzzle master cash at Rankgrip 11,
arrow puzzle masters at 24. Neither is a word game. They appear because the
apps holding their top ten are listed under Word alongside three or four other
categories — the attribution follows the listing, not the game.
Sixteen of the eighteen rows also appear in the casual report. Two are exclusive to word games. When eighty-nine percent of a report is borrowed, the category label is doing very little work.
The cause is the mechanism that serves every other category well: a keyword takes the categories of the apps ranking for it, because Play keywords carry no category of their own and there is no other signal. In a large category the borrowed rows are diluted by genuine ones. In a category this size they are most of the report.
What it gets right
Three rows survive that reading. reel guess movie app at Rankgrip 29, with
demand of 71 and ReelGuess at number one, is a real guessing-game term.
imposter challenge guess who at 16 has the second-lowest grip in the report and
a fifteen-month-old leader. chameleon party at 41 is contested but genuine.
The pattern across those three is guessing, not spelling. Play answers
word-adjacent searches with social deduction and trivia — crosswords barely
feature. guess who 2 player offline at 31 belongs to the same family, and
appears in the board report too.
If you build word games, that is the useful signal in an otherwise weak issue: the demand near your category is for guessing games played with other people, and the vocabulary that reaches it is "guess", "who", "party", "imposter" rather than "word" or "puzzle".
None of the three has a big developer holding more than a couple of the ten slots, and none has an exact title match. On the numbers they are as open as anything in the month's stronger reports. There are simply three of them.
The wall
word puzzle sits at Rankgrip 82 — the highest score in any August report. A
hundred million installs, and the phrase sitting in the app's own title. That is
what a closed term looks like: the clearest case this month of a category's own
name being unavailable to newcomers.
puzzle lovers follows at 53 and teasers at 62. each at 72 is a stray — a
common word that ranks a voice chat app, and the sort of row that survives every
filter and still means nothing.
What comes next for this category
Word games needs a longer measurement window before its report is worth much. The next issue will have two full months to compare and a better chance of separating genuine word-game terms from borrowed ones. Until then, read this one as eighteen rows with three that matter.
The open terms
Ordered by demand, and every term below is one a Play Store search actually returns. This is app store optimization research measured against the live store rather than estimated: Top 10 is how many of the ten results belong to a developer big enough that outranking them is not a listing problem; titles is how many put the phrase in their app name, which is the single hardest signal to beat. Demand ranks these terms against each other — it is not an estimate of searches per month, and no honest number on this page is.
Each app name is a link, marked , that opens that app's Google Play listing in a new tab — in the country and language this report measured, so every row can be checked against the store itself.

The wall
The other half, and the reason to trust the first: the highest demand in word games that is not worth chasing, with the app standing on it. No amount of listing work takes these.

How this was measured
Rankgrip scores how tightly a keyword is already held, 0–100, over four factors: big-developer slot share (40%), exact title matches (25%), leader maturity (20%) and leader tenure (15%). Under 30 is open, 30–69 is a fight worth having, 70 and up will not move.
Terms are attributed to word games by the categories of the apps holding their top ten, then filtered to phrases Play's own autocomplete offers, built only from words at least 50 different app names use. Rankings were measured daily between 2026-07-09 and 2026-08-31. The gate proposed 18; 18 are printed here.
